Sawgrass Expressway project in Coral Springs introduces partial diverging diamond interchange at Sample Road to ease traffic congestion

Coral Springs, Florida – A major roadwork project is now reshaping how drivers move through one of Coral Springs’ busiest corridors. The Florida Turnpike Enterprise has begun work on a $110 million expansion of the Sawgrass Expressway, a project that not only adds new lanes but introduces a new way to move through the Sample Road interchange.
Construction crews are currently widening the Sawgrass Expressway between Atlantic Boulevard (Exit 8) and Sample Road (Exit 11). When finished, the highway will grow from its current layout to five lanes in each direction, aiming to ease congestion and support future traffic growth in northwest Broward County.
But what’s grabbing most of the attention is the planned redesign of the Sample Road interchange into a partial diverging diamond interchange, a modern approach to traffic flow that’s gaining popularity across the country. In this setup, traffic briefly shifts to the opposite side of the road before shifting back, allowing smoother and safer turns without the need to cross oncoming lanes.
According to project details listed on the City of Coral Springs website, “the partial diverging diamond interchange reduces the number of traffic light phases and allows drivers to make left turns without having to cross oncoming traffic, cutting down on delays and potential crashes.” The goal is to reduce the typical stop-and-go bottlenecks seen during rush hour and limit the risk of collisions.
In addition to the new traffic pattern, drivers can expect improvements to entry and exit ramps, better signage and pavement markings, upgraded lighting, and improved drainage throughout the corridor. These elements are all aimed at improving safety and efficiency for the thousands of vehicles that use the expressway daily.
The construction, already underway, will continue through summer 2028. Work is expected to take place both during the day and overnight to speed up progress while managing traffic flow and minimizing disruptions. Portions of the expanded lanes will open in phases as work on adjoining segments is completed.
While the long timeline may require patience from local commuters, city and state officials believe the long-term benefits will be worth the wait. Once complete, the updated stretch of the Sawgrass Expressway and the new diverging diamond interchange at Sample Road are expected to significantly reduce congestion and improve overall traffic safety in the area.
Residents and drivers are encouraged to stay informed about construction progress and traffic advisories by checking updates on the Coral Springs city website and Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise project pages.
