Florida State University introduces new graduate certificate in public health epidemiology to enhance population health education

Florida – Florida State University (FSU) is expanding its commitment to public health education by offering a graduate certificate in Public Health Epidemiology. This new program, offered through the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy (COSSPP), aims to equip students with the essential knowledge and tools needed to understand and address population health, particularly in preventing disease and analyzing health-related events.

The graduate certificate is designed to teach students how to analyze health outcomes, track epidemiological data, assess the impact of public health programs, and implement public health surveillance. As society continues to face a variety of health challenges, the need for skilled professionals in public health epidemiology has never been greater.

“The FSU Public Health Program is proud to offer a graduate-level certification in epidemiology,” said Alan Rowan, Director of the Public Health Program and Teaching Professor at FSU. “This certificate program emphasizes the core concepts, methodologies, and practical applications of epidemiology to understand and safeguard the health of populations and prevent diseases.” Rowan’s statement highlights the growing importance of epidemiology in understanding disease patterns and working to minimize health risks at the population level.

The 12-credit graduate certificate includes four core courses: Public Health Epidemiology, Chronic Disease Epidemiology, Infectious Disease Epidemiology, and Social Epidemiology. These courses cover a wide range of topics, from understanding the spread of infectious diseases to analyzing how social factors influence health outcomes. This well-rounded curriculum ensures that students will be well-prepared to address both current and emerging public health concerns.

According to Rowan, “Upon completion, students will have developed a comprehensive skill set and gained extensive knowledge in the study of health-related events.” The certificate is expected to provide valuable training for both clinicians looking to enhance their expertise and public health professionals eager to broaden their understanding of population health.

The program is open to both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students, providing flexibility for those interested in advancing their careers or exploring public health. The application period for the fall 2025 cohort will open during the second week of classes and close on November 14, 2025. Interested individuals must submit their applications before completing the sixth credit hour of the program.

To graduate with the certificate, students must complete all coursework within seven years from their initial enrollment and maintain a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0. The program is an excellent opportunity for anyone committed to tackling public health issues through evidence-based research and epidemiological practices.
