Longtime Coral Springs TGI Fridays location closes its doors amid national chain restructuring and declining U.S. presence

Coral Springs, Florida – A familiar spot for burgers, ribs, and late-night cocktails has closed its doors in Coral Springs. The TGI Fridays located at 855 N. University Drive, right next to Coral Square Mall, is no longer serving diners after decades of welcoming local patrons.

A note from management, left at the shuttered location, expressed gratitude to the community for years of support. “Thank you for the memories! This TGI Fridays location has proudly served the community for many wonderful years,” the message reads. “We are incredibly grateful for your loyalty, laughter, and unforgettable moments shared here.”

The closing reflects broader challenges facing the once-iconic casual dining chain. TGI Fridays, known for its American bar-and-grill fare and festive atmosphere, has seen its U.S. presence shrink dramatically over the past few years. Changing consumer preferences and increasing competition in the dining industry have contributed to the chain’s struggles to maintain relevance.

According to an April report by CNN, the chain now operates just 85 restaurants across the United States, a steep drop from roughly 270 locations at the start of last year. The brand’s parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2024 with 164 locations still open at the time, and closures have continued as part of a nationwide restructuring effort.

For longtime customers in Coral Springs, the closing marks the end of an era. Many locals recall family dinners, celebrations, and casual nights out spent within the familiar walls of the restaurant. “It’s sad to see such a staple of our community go,” said one nearby resident. “Fridays was more than just a restaurant. It was a place where memories were made.”

The closure also underscores the challenges faced by mid-sized dining chains as consumer habits shift toward fast-casual dining, delivery services, and more personalized experiences. Analysts note that even well-known brands like TGI Fridays are not immune to these pressures, particularly when coupled with economic challenges and rising operational costs.

While the Coral Springs location has closed, the chain still maintains a presence in other parts of the country. However, the rapid reduction in U.S. restaurants highlights the uncertain future for TGI Fridays as it works to stabilize and restructure its operations.

As for the space next to Coral Square Mall, its future is unclear. Local residents are left reminiscing about decades of casual dining experiences, while the community says goodbye to another piece of its culinary history. The closure of this TGI Fridays location serves as a reminder of the ongoing evolution of the restaurant industry and the changing landscape of American dining culture.
