Coral Springs community celebrates brave six-year-old LJ Howells with honorary officer ceremony before critical brain surgery

Coral Springs, Florida – In a heartwarming display of community support, six-year-old LJ Howells of Coral Springs was honored on Monday in a special ceremony that recognized both his courage and his passions. LJ, who has long admired police officers and enjoys tending to lawns, faces a challenging road ahead. Later this month, he will travel to Boston for critical brain surgery to treat multiple brain aneurysms he has battled since toddlerhood.
City staff, first responders, and neighbors gathered outside the Coral Springs Police and Fire Departments to celebrate LJ’s bravery and ensure he felt surrounded by support. In a touching moment, LJ was sworn in as “Officer LJ”, an honorary member of the Coral Springs Police Department. Wearing his own uniform shirt and badge, the young boy stood proudly as officers, firefighters, and city employees cheered and applauded.
The ceremony provided a moment of joy and encouragement for LJ and his family. Police Chief Brad Mock emphasized the importance of community support during such a critical time. “At the end of the day, we wanted him to know that we support him as he supports us,” Mock said. “He’s got a surgery coming up at the end of the month, and we want him to go up there knowing he’s got all of this behind him, fully supporting him and wishing for nothing but the best.”
Following the oath, LJ was treated to a surprise parade featuring flashing police lights, sirens, and a fleet of public works trucks, fire engines, and police cars. Residents lined the streets to wave, cheer, and witness the joyful celebration. LJ, smiling from ear to ear, returned salutes to the passing vehicles, embodying the spirit and resilience that inspired the community’s tribute.
The ceremony highlighted more than LJ’s love of law enforcement; it underscored the solidarity of a community rallying around a young boy facing serious health challenges. The event offered a rare chance for LJ and his family to experience moments of levity and encouragement amidst the stress and uncertainty of his upcoming surgery.
City officials and first responders described the day as a small but meaningful way to honor LJ’s bravery and remind him that he is not alone. From the playful parade to the official badge and uniform, every detail was intended to lift his spirits and provide a sense of strength as he prepares for his medical journey.
For LJ, the honorary officer title and celebration were more than ceremonial – they were a symbol of hope, encouragement, and the power of community. The Coral Springs event served as a vivid reminder that even the youngest members of a community can inspire acts of compassion, generosity, and solidarity in ways that touch everyone around them.
As LJ prepares for surgery later this month, his city stands firmly behind him, sending well wishes, love, and unwavering support to ensure that the brave six-year-old feels the strength of an entire community rooting for his recovery.
