City of Coral Springs earns prestigious LEED Gold Certification recognizing excellence in sustainability and community development

Coral Springs, Florida – The City of Coral Springs has reached a major environmental milestone, officially earning LEED Gold Certification under the LEED for Cities and Communities rating system. This prestigious recognition highlights the city’s long-standing efforts to adopt sustainable practices, reduce environmental impact, and improve the overall quality of life for its residents.
The award, presented by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), places Coral Springs among an elite group of more than 200 cities and communities around the world that have met the rigorous standards for sustainability set by the LEED program. The framework guides local governments in measuring progress and performance across a wide range of categories — including energy use, water conservation, waste management, transportation, and ecological preservation.
To achieve Gold-level certification, Coral Springs earned 61 points out of a possible 110 by implementing data-driven solutions that support long-term resilience and environmental stewardship. City officials said the recognition reflects a collaborative effort across departments to make Coral Springs a cleaner, greener, and more livable place.
Dr. Andrea Lemaitre, the city’s Sustainability Manager, said the recognition marks a turning point in Coral Springs’ ongoing sustainability efforts. “This certification is a proud milestone in our city’s ongoing sustainability journey,” said Lemaitre. “LEED Gold validates the work we’ve done to improve quality of life for all residents, support smart growth, and reduce our environmental impact. It also serves as a strong foundation for future data-driven initiatives that will guide city planning, performance, and innovation.”
The city’s application for certification highlighted several areas of achievement, including quality of life, water efficiency, energy use and greenhouse gas reduction, natural systems protection, and transportation and land use planning. Coral Springs has also made notable progress in waste reduction and the use of sustainable materials, further aligning with LEED’s holistic vision for community well-being.
This latest recognition builds on Coral Springs’ growing reputation as a leader in sustainability innovation. In 2024, the city was selected as one of just 12 municipalities nationwide to participate in the USGBC’s LEED for Cities Local Government Leadership Program. That initiative provided specialized training, technical support, and opportunities for collaboration among local governments seeking to expand their sustainability portfolios.
City officials say the LEED Gold Certification not only validates Coral Springs’ efforts to date but also lays the groundwork for continued improvement. The city plans to use the certification’s performance metrics to inform future projects, from energy-efficient infrastructure to expanded green spaces and sustainable transportation options.
The achievement was formally presented at the City Commission meeting on October 15, 2025, where officials expressed pride in the city’s growing reputation as a forward-thinking community committed to environmental responsibility.
With the LEED Gold designation now in place, Coral Springs joins a select group of cities that are proving sustainability and economic growth can go hand in hand. The recognition underscores the city’s dedication to creating a healthier, more resilient environment for current and future generations.
