Florida’s History Shop invites Florida based artists to showcase and sell their artwork through a new consignment program

Tallahassee, Florida – Florida-based artists have a new opportunity to share their creations with the public, as Secretary of State Cord Byrd announced that Florida’s History Shop is seeking proposals from local artists to sell Florida-themed artwork through consignment. The retail store, which represents the Museum of Florida History, is inviting artists to submit original works that capture Florida’s history, wildlife, environment, or demonstrate traditional skills learned within the state.

“The Florida Department of State is pleased to provide opportunities for Florida artists to have their work available for sale at Florida’s History Shop locations in Tallahassee and online,” Secretary Byrd said. “As the Florida Department of State celebrates America’s 250th anniversary next year, we are excited to provide customers with unique, Florida-inspired merchandise that represents the history and natural beauty of our state.”

Artists can submit a variety of mediums for consideration, including textiles, paintings, jewelry, porcelain, or woodwork, though other forms of artwork may also be accepted. The goal is to highlight creativity that reflects the culture and natural richness of Florida, providing both visitors and online shoppers with distinctive pieces that cannot be found elsewhere.

Florida’s History Shop operates under a consignment model, offering a 60/40 payment split between the artist and the store. The store encourages submissions for works priced between $50 and $500, making it accessible for emerging and established artists alike. Sales proceeds go toward supporting the educational programs of the Museum of Florida History, Florida’s official state history museum, ensuring that every purchase contributes to the preservation and promotion of the state’s rich cultural heritage.

The museum’s retail presence spans multiple locations, including the Florida Historic Capitol Museum and The Capitol in Tallahassee. Additionally, the History Shop maintains an online store at FloridasHistoryShop.com, extending the reach of artists’ works to audiences across the state and beyond.

Interested artists are encouraged to reach out to Jennafer Henderson, store manager, by December 12, 2025, via email at [email protected] or by phone at 850.245.6375. Acceptance of artwork for consignment is determined solely by the Florida Department of State, reflecting a selective process that aims to maintain high quality and relevance to Florida’s history and culture.

By providing these opportunities, the Florida Department of State hopes to support local creators, expand the visibility of Florida-inspired art, and give residents and visitors access to pieces that celebrate the state’s heritage and natural environment. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to showcase homegrown talent while enhancing the museum experience through meaningful engagement with Florida’s artistic community.

The call for submissions comes at a timely moment as the state prepares to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, offering artists a platform to contribute to a year-long commemoration of history, innovation, and culture. By featuring Florida-based artwork in its stores and online, Florida’s History Shop aims to create a space where history and contemporary creativity intersect.

Artists who have long sought a venue to showcase Florida-themed creations now have the chance to display their talent to a broad audience while supporting the educational mission of the Museum of Florida History. With a wide variety of acceptable mediums and a straightforward consignment process, the initiative is accessible to both emerging and seasoned artists looking to make their mark.

For those interested in participating, reaching out before the December 12, 2025, deadline is crucial. With careful curation and a focus on authenticity, Florida’s History Shop promises a unique opportunity for artists to connect with collectors, history enthusiasts, and residents eager to celebrate the state’s rich heritage.

This initiative not only provides a commercial outlet for local artists, but also reinforces the state’s commitment to fostering creativity and preserving the cultural legacy of Florida. Through this program, the Florida Department of State demonstrates its ongoing dedication to both artistic expression and historical preservation, ensuring that the stories and landscapes of the Sunshine State continue to inspire generations.
