Woman arrested after fight breaks out between two families in the lobby of Broward Health Coral Springs emergency room

Coral Springs, Florida – A confrontation between two families escalated into a physical altercation in the lobby of Broward Health Coral Springs Hospital, resulting in the arrest of a 28-year-old Fort Lauderdale woman. The incident occurred around midnight on November 30, following a dispute over their children being treated in the emergency room.
Authorities identified the woman as Shymiesha Akemyma Wilson, who was charged with battery after Coral Springs police responded to a call reporting multiple individuals fighting in the hospital lobby. According to a police report, the disturbance began when the families began blaming each other for their children needing emergency care following an earlier incident in Margate.
A hospital employee who witnessed the confrontation contacted police as the situation quickly escalated. “The female victim told police that she stepped in between her husband and the other family as he was arguing with them, trying to calm everyone down,” the report states. Despite her efforts, tensions intensified, and a physical fight broke out.
The report details that Wilson and her family held the couple’s son responsible for the hospitalization of their child. As the argument became more heated, the husband engaged in a verbal dispute with Wilson’s family, prompting his wife to intervene and act as a buffer between the two sides. A security guard who was present also tried to maintain order and prevent the argument from turning violent.
At one point, according to the police report, Wilson allegedly placed her personal belongings on the lobby desk, jumped into the altercation, and assumed a fighting stance. Both the couple and the security guard told officers that Wilson then pushed the wife, escalating the situation into a full physical confrontation.
Wilson gave her own statement to police, claiming that she was actually standing between the arguing parties when the couple approached her. However, her version of events did not match what police observed on surveillance video from the hospital. Based on video evidence and witness accounts, officers determined that Wilson initiated the contact, which led to her arrest.
After being taken into custody, Wilson was transported to the Broward County Main Jail. Court records indicate she was later released after posting a $1,000 bond. Police continue to review the incident, noting the challenges of maintaining safety in a busy hospital environment while conflicts arise unexpectedly.
The incident highlights the pressures and heightened emotions that can occur in emergency rooms, especially when children are involved. Hospital staff and security personnel often face difficult situations when trying to de-escalate confrontations between family members or other visitors. Broward Health Coral Springs has protocols in place for handling disturbances, but officials stress the importance of cooperation and restraint from all parties.
While no serious injuries were reported, the confrontation serves as a reminder of the tensions that can flare in emergency care settings. Authorities continue to encourage the public to report incidents promptly and allow hospital staff to manage patient care without interference.
