Coral Springs police arrest man after argument over a beer escalates into violent knife attack

Coral Springs, Florida – A casual disagreement over a beer turned into a violent confrontation in Coral Springs on December 10, when police say a man attempted to stab his roommate during an altercation on the apartment’s front patio.
The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m., according to a police report. The roommate, who had been renting a room from 32-year-old Jonathan Alonso Hernandez for approximately six months, called authorities after the altercation escalated.
The report details that the conflict began when Hernandez, who had been drinking, offered his roommate a beer. When the roommate declined, Hernandez reportedly became agitated. “He told his roommate that he was not his friend and slapped him in the face,” the report said.

After the initial confrontation, Hernandez went inside the apartment and armed himself with a kitchen knife before returning to the patio. Police say he first tried to stab his roommate in the left side of the chest, but the roommate managed to grab Hernandez’s wrist, preventing a potentially fatal strike. The confrontation continued as Hernandez then attempted to stab him in the face, cutting the roommate on the left cheek.
During the struggle, the roommate fell down a flight of stairs, further escalating the chaotic scene. Hernandez returned inside the apartment, prompting the roommate to immediately call police. The roommate told authorities that he believed Hernandez was attempting to intimidate him rather than cause serious harm.
When officers arrived at the scene, they ordered Hernandez to exit the apartment, but he refused. A judge subsequently issued a search warrant for the residence, which police executed the following day. Hernandez eventually emerged from the apartment, leading to his arrest.
Coral Springs police charged Hernandez with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was transported to the Broward County Main Jail and later released after posting a $10,000 bond, according to court records.

Officials emphasized the dangers of alcohol-fueled disputes and the potential for household conflicts to turn deadly when weapons are involved. “This is a stark reminder that even small disagreements can quickly escalate when emotions run high and alcohol is involved,” a police spokesperson said.
Neighbors and local residents expressed concern over the incident, noting that violent disputes in residential areas are uncommon but can have serious consequences. Law enforcement continues to encourage residents to seek help in situations where tensions rise and to report dangerous behavior before it escalates.
Hernandez’s arrest serves as a warning about the risks of domestic disputes and the importance of de-escalating conflicts safely. Police stressed that the swift intervention likely prevented further injury, highlighting the role of both the victim’s quick reaction and prompt law enforcement response.
Authorities continue to remind the public that aggravated assault with a deadly weapon is a serious charge that can carry significant penalties, including jail time and long-term legal consequences. Residents who encounter similar situations are urged to contact law enforcement immediately and avoid direct confrontation when weapons are involved.
The Coral Springs Police Department has not indicated whether Hernandez has a prior criminal history but confirmed that the investigation into the December 10 incident remains active.
