Lightning strike sparks fire in attic of Fort Myers home

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A house caught fire at 8857 Fawn Ridge Dr. after Wednesday evening’s storms.

According to South Trail Fire, the fire ignited in the home’s attic because of a lightning strike. The flames spread through the roof and a column of smoke could be seen from the road.

The fire took quite a bit of water to extinguish, according to officials. In the end, the home had significant damage to the roof and heavy water damage.

“Unfortunately there is a lot of water damage to the interior and it was to the upper floor,” South Trail Fire PIO Amy Bollen said. ” So all that water will drain down and cause a lot of interior damage.”

The family who resided at the home is being assisted by the Red Cross after crews determined the home was not liveable, according to South Trail Fire.
