Broward County Schools alert Coral Springs families to a dangerous TikTok trend that encourages teens to engage in self-harm

Coral Springs, Florida – Broward County Public Schools is urging parents, guardians, and students to be vigilant after a dangerous TikTok trend called “I Picked a Date” began circulating online. The trend reportedly encourages teens to post the specific date they plan to harm themselves, raising serious concerns about the safety and mental well-being of vulnerable students.

In a message sent to families on Friday, district officials emphasized the importance of monitoring children’s social media activity. They warned that exposure to such content could have a harmful influence and potentially trigger risky behaviors among young people. “Suicide is preventable,” the district stressed, encouraging parents to start conversations about mental health, recognize warning signs, and remain engaged with their children’s online interactions.

The alert also included guidance for teachers and school staff, reminding them to report any concerning behavior or signs of emotional distress to administrators or mental health professionals. Staff at Coral Springs schools are being asked to stay attentive to changes in student behavior, including withdrawal, sudden mood shifts, or references to self-harm, and to provide support or refer students to appropriate resources.

Students struggling with mental health concerns are urged to speak with a school counselor, social worker, or another trusted adult on campus. Additionally, district officials provided information on 24-hour support lines, including calling or texting 9-8-8, dialing 2-1-1, or texting “FL” to 741-741 for confidential guidance and assistance. These resources are available to help young people in crisis or those worried about friends.

“The district encourages families to help reduce stigma around mental health by staying alert and engaging in meaningful conversations,” officials said. By fostering an open dialogue about mental health, the schools hope to create an environment where students feel safe seeking help and understanding that reaching out is a sign of strength.

The TikTok trend comes amid growing concern about social media platforms influencing adolescent behavior and amplifying risky or harmful content. Broward County Public Schools, including Coral Springs campuses, is actively working to educate families and students about the dangers of such trends and provide resources for mental health support.
