Margate man faces multiple charges after assaulting wife and kicking officer during arrest in Coral Springs
Coral Springs, Florida – A 36-year-old Margate man is facing multiple charges after a chaotic incident in Coral Springs that involved assaulting his wife and resisting police, including kicking an officer during his arrest. Authorities identified the suspect as Angel Eduardo Alvarez-Alfaro, who is now charged with battery of a law enforcement officer, battery with intent to cause bodily harm, and obstructing an officer without violence, according to the police report.
The events unfolded around 10 p.m. on March 18 in the parking lot of Pollo Tropical, located at 5270 Wiles Road. Police were called to the scene after a 911 caller reported that a man in a pickup truck appeared to be snorting something and nearly collided with her vehicle. The caller said Alvarez-Alfaro then parked in the middle of the parking lot and remained outside his vehicle when officers arrived.
According to the report, Alvarez-Alfaro quickly escalated the situation by retrieving a firearm from his waistband while standing near his truck. He held the gun by the barrel and pointed it away from officers, who were able to secure the weapon without incident. The officers unloaded the gun and placed it on the truck bed cover while trying to keep the situation under control.
Police said Alvarez-Alfaro appeared intoxicated and repeatedly ignored their instructions to sit on the curb. Each time he sat down, he got back up and approached the gun on the truck, forcing officers to handcuff him and sit him down again. During this period, police determined there were no witnesses to his driving, so they contacted his wife to pick him up.
Even while waiting for his wife, Alvarez-Alfaro continued to defy officers’ orders. The report states that he spat on the glass separating the front and back seats of the police car and refused to leave when his wife arrived. Police removed his handcuffs and told him he could leave with her, but Alvarez-Alfaro instead approached the police vehicle and demanded the officers’ names while asking if their body-worn cameras were activated.
The situation turned violent when he grabbed his wife by the left arm, pulled her close, and screamed at her. Two officers attempted to restrain him and place him back in handcuffs. Alvarez-Alfaro resisted, prompting officers to take him to the ground to secure him. Once handcuffed, he continued to resist by refusing to enter the police car. When an officer pushed him by the chest to guide him inside, Alvarez-Alfaro fell backward and kicked the officer in the upper abdomen, according to the report.
After being restrained, Alvarez-Alfaro was taken to Broward Health Coral Springs for medical clearance. He was then booked into Broward County Main Jail, where he remained in custody on an immigration hold. A judge later set bond for him, but records indicate he has not been released due to the immigration hold.
“This case illustrates the challenges officers face when dealing with individuals under the influence who resist arrest,” said a Coral Springs police spokesperson. “Our primary concern is ensuring the safety of everyone involved, including the public and the officers on the scene.”
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and criminal charges related to the assault on the officer and battery against his wife are pending. Police urged anyone with additional information about the events that night to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
The incident has sparked discussion in the community about public safety and the dangers of alcohol or drug-impaired behavior, particularly when combined with firearms. Coral Springs police emphasized their commitment to enforcing the law while protecting the community, highlighting the importance of compliance during interactions with law enforcement.
Alvarez-Alfaro is scheduled to appear in Broward County court for his charges, and the case remains under review. Meanwhile, his wife has been offered resources for support and protection following the assault. The Coral Springs Police Department reminded residents that anyone facing domestic violence or threatening situations should immediately contact law enforcement.
This high-profile case underscores the volatile nature of domestic disputes, the challenges police face in controlling dangerous situations, and the serious consequences of resisting arrest, particularly when violence is involved.
