Former CVS pharmacy in Coral Springs could become automatic car wash

Coral Springs, Florida – A former CVS pharmacy building in Coral Springs that has remained vacant for more than four years could be transformed into an automatic car wash under a proposal scheduled for review by city officials.

Miami-based El Car Wash is seeking to redevelop the former pharmacy property at 8151 Wiles Road, near the intersection with Riverside Drive, into a new vehicle cleaning facility.

The proposal is scheduled to go before the Coral Springs Administrative Zoning Review Committee on Tuesday, October 27, at 9:30 a.m.

According to city planning documents, the project would include an automatic car wash, eight vacuum stations, and a parking area designed to accommodate customers and vehicle circulation.

The plans also provide for 52 parking spaces and enough room for 12 vehicles waiting to enter the car wash.

The proposed development would bring a new commercial use to a property that has been unoccupied since the pharmacy closed in June 2022.

The former CVS location was among the stores affected by the pharmacy chain’s nationwide restructuring plan, which included the closure of approximately 900 stores.

Since then, the building has remained empty, leaving a commercial property at a busy intersection without an operating tenant.

El Car Wash is proposing to repurpose the location rather than continue using it as a traditional retail pharmacy.

The company was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in Miami.

According to information included in its application, El Car Wash operates more than 100 locations across the United States, including 13 facilities in Broward County.

The Coral Springs proposal would represent another potential addition to the company’s existing network in South Florida.

However, the project remains subject to the city’s review process and any required approvals.

One of the issues under consideration involves the property’s proposed traffic circulation design.

El Car Wash is requesting a waiver from a city requirement for a separate escape lane that would allow drivers to leave the car wash queue before entering the washing equipment.

Such a lane generally provides motorists with an alternative route if they decide not to proceed through the facility.

The company’s proposed layout does not include a separate lane of that type, prompting the request for an exception to the requirement.

City planning staff reviewed the proposal and concluded that the proposed vehicle circulation arrangement would allow traffic to move safely through the property without interfering with nearby businesses.

Based on that assessment, city staff is recommending approval of the waiver request.

The recommendation, however, does not mean the project has received final approval.

The Administrative Zoning Review Committee is expected to consider the proposal during its October 27 meeting, when the requested waiver and site plans will be subject to review.

If the project ultimately receives the necessary approvals and moves forward, the long-vacant building could be returned to commercial use as a vehicle cleaning facility.

The available announcement does not provide a construction schedule or an anticipated opening date for the proposed car wash.
