Zoning proposal for David Beckham’s Miami Freedom Park approved by city commissioners

MIAMI – David Beckham’s dream of building a stadium for his Major League Soccer team, Inter Miami CF, came true.

On Tuesday night, city commissioners adopted a zoning proposal that paves the way for the building of Miami Freedom Park.

Next to Miami International Airport, the Melreese Country Club will be transformed into a soccer stadium, a commercial complex, and more.

This year, commissioners gave Major League Soccer a 99-year lease on public land without a bid.

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez thanked commissioners in a post on social media. “I want to thank my commission for their continued support of the best sports deals in 🇺🇸 bringing a Multi-Billion Dollar win for Miami residents using zero taxpayer dollars. A new park, an @MLS stadium, & thousands of new jobs coming soon.”

Beckham and Jorge Mas, a wealthy co-owner, are paying for Miami Freedom Park. They are cleaning up the site and building the complex, as well as paying property taxes and $4.3 million in rent every year.
