Famous Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach was demolished on Sunday

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – On Sunday morning, a piece of Miami Beach’s past was destroyed in the process of making room for new construction.

The famous Deauville Hotel was destroyed after the building was deemed unsafe. After years of legal fights and a failed voter referendum, construction of a new luxury complex for the site was proposed. The idea was backed up by the mayor, despite the opposition of preservationists.

“Of course I was disappointed that something had to happen with this site. Otherwise it’s going to continue as it has for five years to be an eyesore and a drag on the North Beach community,” Mayor Dan Gelber said.

The preparation of the site for demolition took the contractors several weeks, during which time they drilled more than 1,200 holes in the building and removed materials. The demolition started only a few minutes after 8 in the morning.
