Overtown Business Association named Florida Main Street Program of the Month

Tallahassee, Florida – The Overtown Business Association (OBA) has been named Florida Main Street Program of the Month for February 2025, a recognition that highlights the community’s dedication to revitalizing its historic district while preserving its cultural heritage. Secretary of State Cord Byrd announced the honor, commending the OBA for its impactful efforts in the neighborhood.
Secretary Byrd expressed his admiration for Overtown’s progress since the OBA’s reorganization. “It has been wonderful witnessing Overtown Business Association’s achievements since their reorganization,” he said. “With the development of the Overtown Heritage Corner, this community has shown that it is invested in promoting the past and present to ensure a bright future.” The Overtown Heritage Corner, which launched in 2024, is an exciting development aimed at honoring the neighborhood’s deep-rooted history while fostering economic and cultural growth.

Founded in 1896, Overtown became a central hub for Black residents in Miami during the early 20th century. The neighborhood’s Lyric Theatre, which opened in 1913, served as a cultural epicenter where iconic figures such as Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington performed. Over the years, Overtown thrived with a strong network of businesses, churches, and schools, creating a vibrant community for its residents. However, the area also faced periods of hardship, and revitalization efforts have been ongoing to preserve its rich legacy.
One key project in Overtown’s revitalization has been the 2015 Overtown Transit Village, which focuses on economic development while preserving the cultural fabric of the community. The Overtown Heritage Corner is another major initiative within these efforts, offering retail spaces, food stalls, a café, performance areas, and more. These elements are designed to celebrate Overtown’s artistic traditions while providing economic opportunities for local residents.

These activities not only bring the community together but also showcase the talent and resilience of Overtown’s residents.
As the Overtown Business Association moves forward with its plans, the Florida Main Street Program of the Month designation serves as an affirmation of the district’s success in creating a sustainable, community-led revitalization model. Overtown’s efforts continue to strengthen its legacy while shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
