Traffic in Coral Springs flows smoothly again on University Drive after two long years of construction-related disruptions and roadwork

Coral Springs, Florida – After more than two years of construction disruptions, traffic is finally flowing freely on University Drive in Coral Springs, bringing relief to both commuters and local businesses. The once-busy stretch of road, north of Sample Road, had been plagued by construction delays, road closures, and endless detours. However, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is now on the brink of completing their $13.7 million University Drive Mobility Improvement Project.
As of now, the roadways are clear. Gone are the construction trucks, heavy equipment, and the ever-present traffic cones that seemed to have taken permanent residence along the road. Yet, while the major disruptions have ceased, the final touches are still being applied to the project. “The remaining construction activities include performing nighttime paving work, installing sections of landscape within the medians, completing irrigation, installing new signage and pavement markings, and finalizing signal work,” said Christian Gonzalez, a community outreach specialist with the FDOT. He reassured the public that all remaining tasks should be completed by the end of April or early May, bringing the project to its long-awaited conclusion.
The project, which began in January 2023, has been a significant undertaking, aiming to improve traffic flow and enhance safety along a vital corridor of the city. Once finished, the stretch of University Drive between Sample Road and the Sawgrass Expressway will feature widened traffic and bike lanes, a relocated six-foot sidewalk, and upgraded drainage systems. In addition, traffic signals at NW 40th Street and Westview Drive will be improved, 77 new light poles will be installed, curb ramps will be upgraded, and the entire roadway will be resurfaced. The project’s comprehensive upgrades are designed to accommodate increasing traffic demands while also enhancing safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
While the end of construction is in sight, the journey to this point has not been without challenges. During the height of the construction process, drivers faced constant lane closures, frequent traffic detours, and slow-moving traffic. Local businesses and residents were particularly affected by the ongoing disruptions. Despite these inconveniences, the FDOT has remained committed to improving the area’s infrastructure to better serve the community in the long run.
As the project nears completion, the road ahead looks much smoother for Coral Springs drivers. The mobility improvements are expected to not only alleviate traffic congestion but also enhance the overall quality of life for residents and visitors in the area. The final stages of construction are expected to cause minimal disruptions, and the community is looking forward to the finished product. With the end of the construction zone in sight, residents can soon enjoy a more efficient and safer driving experience on University Drive.
