Coral Springs man arrested for allegedly setting fire to family home, causing significant damage to property

Coral Springs, Florida – A Coral Springs man was arrested last week after allegedly setting his family’s home on fire in an apparent act of arson. Jacqulin Oneuil, 29, was charged with first-degree arson of an occupied structure after a fire destroyed the family home on May 1.

According to a police report, the incident took place around 10:45 p.m. when officers responded to a distressing 911 call. The caller, a woman, reported that her son, Oneuil, had poured gasoline throughout their home and set it ablaze. She told police that she was in her room when she heard Oneuil shouting, “Don’t do that!” shortly before the fire ignited.

Witnesses reported seeing Oneuil holding a lighter, and at one point, he was overheard telling a family member, “Get out the house, I’m about to burn the house down,” before the flames broke out. The family was in the home at the time of the fire, but fortunately, everyone was able to escape unharmed.

Surveillance footage from a nearby Wawa gas station on Sample Road showed that Oneuil had purchased gasoline just before the fire. Investigators later confirmed that the fire was intentionally set. According to the State Fire Marshal’s findings, the fire’s origin was near the front door, and there were no signs of accidental ignition sources present. The damage to the home was extensive, with both fire and smoke rendering the property uninhabitable.

The police report also indicated that Oneuil had a history of mental health issues. In 2024, he was Baker Acted after making threats to burn down the family home. This past history may provide further context to the disturbing event that took place last week.

Despite the terrifying situation, no one in the household was injured. The fire could have been catastrophic, but thanks to the swift action of the residents, the situation did not escalate further. The authorities have yet to confirm the exact address of the home, as it was redacted in the police report, though Oneuil was arrested at 4000 Rock Island Road.

Following his arrest, Oneuil was held at Broward County Jail without bond. He faces serious charges, including first-degree arson, which carries severe penalties. His actions have left a family without a home and raised concerns about his mental health and well-being.

The Coral Springs community has been shocked by the events, as many struggle to understand how a family member could commit such a violent act against those closest to them. Local residents have expressed their concern for the family and have offered support in the wake of this harrowing incident.

The fire investigation continues, and authorities are working to determine if there were any underlying factors that may have contributed to Oneuil’s actions. As of now, he remains in custody, awaiting further proceedings in his case.
