Coral Springs father returns to Broward Health North three years after devastating bike accident to thank trauma team that saved his life

Coral Springs, Florida – A heartwarming reunion took place at Broward Health North on May 16, as Gary Mule, a Coral Springs resident and father of two, returned to thank the trauma team that saved his life after a harrowing bike accident nearly three years ago. This emotional visit, timed just ahead of National Trauma Survivors Day, marked the first time Mule had the chance to meet the doctors and nurses who were by his side during his most critical moments.
Mule, now 51, was involved in a devastating accident while on a 31-mile morning bike ride. Early one day in 2022, he was struck by a car, an impact that left him with multiple life-threatening injuries. Among his most severe injuries was a traumatic brain injury that left him without memory for more than three weeks. Additionally, Mule sustained a fractured clavicle, broken ribs, and a punctured lung. At the time, his doctors gave him just a 50/50 chance of survival. The incident seemed like it might claim his life, but the expertise and care he received at Broward Health North, a Level II trauma center, were pivotal in his recovery.
Mule’s journey from the brink of death to a full recovery is nothing short of remarkable. Six months after the accident, Mule was able to return to work part-time at Doris Italian Market & Bakery in Coral Springs, slowly rebuilding his life. But his recovery didn’t stop there. Nearly a year after the crash, Mule was back at the activities he loved, including triathlons, swimming, cycling, and running. His resilience and determination to regain his previous lifestyle are a testament to the power of both medical care and personal will.
During his visit to the hospital, Mule expressed his gratitude for the trauma team that had fought so hard to keep him alive. “I don’t remember much of my time in the hospital, but I will never forget the care and support I received from this incredible team,” he said. “They gave me a second chance at life, and for that, I will always be grateful.”
For the doctors and nurses who played a key role in Mule’s recovery, the reunion was a touching reminder of the impact their work has on patients’ lives. It’s not often they get the opportunity to see their patients return to health and lead fulfilling lives after a traumatic event.
