Coral Springs community members and officers receive recognition for their heroic actions in saving a 2-year-old boy from drowning at a local pool

Coral Springs, Florida – A heartwarming story of bravery and quick thinking unfolded on February 16, when a group of Coral Springs residents and officers saved the life of a 2-year-old boy who was found unresponsive at the bottom of a community pool. The Coral Springs City Commission recently honored five individuals for their heroic actions during the near-drowning incident at the Avana apartment clubhouse, located at 3600 Terrapin Lane.
The quick response came from two 11-year-old boys, Duwix Brutus and Adan Witty, who were enjoying the day at the pool when they noticed the child motionless at the bottom of the water. Realizing the child wasn’t breathing, the young friends immediately sprang into action. Without hesitation, Brutus dove into the pool, retrieved the boy, and, with Witty’s help, brought the child back to the surface.
The sight of the lifeless child immediately triggered a swift and coordinated response from several adults present at the scene. Samantha Witty, Jaciann Holgate, and Marsha Rondon all played critical roles in the rescue. Holgate began performing CPR on the child after initial attempts to revive him had failed. Rondon, drawing from her nursing experience, then took over and successfully completed a round of CPR just as first responders arrived.
During the Coral Springs City Commission meeting on Wednesday, city officials took a moment to recognize the selflessness and bravery displayed by the group. Police Chief Brad Mock shared his appreciation for the community’s response, stating, “These are the worst calls we have to run to in our careers. But when we run to calls and have outstanding citizens who jump in selflessly and save a life, it is very rewarding.” Mock’s words resonated with everyone in attendance, underscoring the impact of the citizens’ quick actions.
Mayor Scott J. Brook also expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the significance of their heroic efforts. “We can’t thank you enough for contributing to our community and saving a life,” Mayor Brook said. “And especially these two young men, having the presence of mind and the hearts to go in and commit a selfless act.”
The group’s actions, from the swift rescue to the critical CPR administered, were crucial in saving the child’s life. After being rushed to Broward Health Coral Springs, the young boy survived and was given a second chance at life, thanks to the collective efforts of the residents and the first responders who arrived on the scene.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community, quick thinking, and the willingness to help in critical situations. In moments of crisis, the actions of ordinary people can make all the difference.
