Coral Springs Charter softball team knocks off Cardinal Gibbons to win regional title after overcoming two earlier season losses against the highly ranked opponent in a decisive postseason performance

Coral Springs, Florida – The Coral Springs Charter School softball team delivered a breakthrough performance when it mattered most, knocking off Cardinal Gibbons High School to capture a Regional Championship in a tightly contested matchup that capped off a season defined by growth, adjustments, and timely execution.

The Panthers entered the game with history sitting right in front of them. Facing Cardinal Gibbons for the third time this season, CSC had already come up short twice in earlier meetings, including narrow extra-innings losses in both the Big-8 and District Tournament. This time, however, the result finally swung in their favor.

The challenge was significant. Cardinal Gibbons came into the game ranked third in the state and 19th nationally, carrying both momentum and expectations. But Coral Springs Charter showed early that this meeting would unfold differently.

The Panthers struck first when Cam Thiele launched a home run to put CSC on the scoreboard. The early lead immediately shifted energy on the field, giving Coral Springs Charter a boost against a team that had previously controlled the matchup in late innings.

Later, Jazzy Chung added another key moment with a two-run homer, pushing the lead to 3-0 and putting pressure on Cardinal Gibbons to respond. The Panthers’ offense, while not overwhelming in volume, was efficient and timely, capitalizing on opportunities that had slipped away in earlier losses.

On the defensive side, Courtney Wahlbrink set the tone with a dominant performance in the circle. She held Cardinal Gibbons hitless through six full innings, controlling pace and rhythm while keeping one of the top-ranked offenses in the state off balance.

Even in the seventh inning, when Cardinal Gibbons finally managed to break through with a pair of hits, Coral Springs Charter stayed composed. The Panthers limited the damage and closed out the game with a 3-1 victory, securing the regional title in front of a competitive opponent that never stopped pushing.

“One of our most gratifying wins since we’ve been at CSC for sure,” Head Coach Mark Montimurro said. “We have been working on shortening our swings and eliminating the strikeout. Our girls did a great job executing the game plan, and Wahlbrink was spectacular as usual.”

The win pushed Coral Springs Charter to a 21-4 record on the season and marked a major step forward for a program that continues to build on its tradition of success. With the regional title secured, the Panthers now advance to the State Championship for the first time since 2022.

The victory also adds another milestone to Head Coach Montimurro’s long tenure at CSC. Since taking over the program, he has led the Panthers to a 328-39 record over 14 seasons, along with a state championship in 2019.

For Coral Springs Charter, this win was more than just a trophy moment. It was a response to past setbacks, a demonstration of adjustments made at the plate, and a reminder that persistence can eventually rewrite a familiar result.

As the Panthers move deeper into postseason play, they do so carrying momentum, confidence, and a clear sense that their best baseball may still be ahead.
