Drunk driver faces multiple charges after speeding through a red light causes fatal rear-end crash in Coral Springs
Coral Sprigs, Florida – A 74-year-old man was killed after a speeding driver who police say was impaired crashed into the back of his SUV at a Coral Springs intersection Monday afternoon.
The deadly crash happened around 4:47 p.m. on July 20 at the intersection of Sample Road and Turtle Run Boulevard, according to the Coral Springs Police Department. Investigators said the collision occurred when a Toyota Tundra traveling at a high rate of speed failed to stop at a red light and struck another vehicle that was stopped ahead.
Coral Springs Police Sgt. Francis Capre said Leonard Scibilia was driving a silver 2022 Toyota Highlander westbound on Sample Road when he was struck from behind. Police said Scibilia had stopped at the intersection when the crash occurred.
According to authorities, a blue 2017 Toyota Tundra approached the intersection from behind at a dangerous speed. Police said the driver of the Tundra did not stop for the red traffic signal and crashed into the rear of Scibilia’s SUV.
The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles. Police said airbags deployed in both the Highlander and the Tundra as a result of the force of the crash.
Emergency responders transported Scibilia to Broward Health North following the collision. Despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the Tundra, identified by police as 42-year-old Joseph Callejo, was arrested following the crash. Authorities said he is facing multiple charges connected to the fatal collision.
Jail records show Callejo has been charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, refusal to submit to DUI testing, DUI with property or personal damage, first-offense DUI involving alcohol or drugs, and reckless driving.
Police said the investigation into the crash remains active as detectives continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officials have not released additional details about what led up to the crash or whether other factors contributed to the incident.
The case highlights the serious consequences of impaired and reckless driving, especially when combined with excessive speed and failure to follow traffic signals. Authorities continue to remind drivers that decisions made behind the wheel can have life-changing effects for victims, families and entire communities.
As the investigation continues, prosecutors will review the evidence collected by police to determine the next steps in the criminal case against Callejo. The charges remain allegations, and the case will proceed through the court system.
