Coral Springs prepares to award Sportsplex design contract as major recreation project could reach $100 million
Coral Springs, Florida – A major step toward a proposed transformation of the Coral Springs Sportsplex is expected this week as city commissioners prepare to vote on a contract for the first phase of design work. The project, which could eventually cost as much as $100 million, is expected to bring new recreational opportunities, upgraded facilities, and expanded spaces for residents and visitors.
The Coral Springs City Commission is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, August 5, to consider awarding a $1,171,988 contract to PBK Architects Florida for the initial design phase of the Sportsplex improvements. The firm was selected as the top choice by the city’s evaluation committee after competing against other finalists.
The first phase of the agreement will focus on concept and schematic designs, allowing city officials to develop a clearer vision for the proposed facility improvements. Officials have identified this stage as an important decision point before moving further into the project.
City Manager Catherine Givens previously told commissioners that reaching this design milestone would allow the city to pause the Sportsplex project if needed and shift attention toward another major priority, the relocation of Coral Springs Charter School.
According to city documents, the total cost of the design phases and construction administration contracts could reach approximately $5.9 million. These agreements would require additional approval from the City Commission before moving forward.
Funding for the initial design contract will come from the city’s capital budget and will not require a tax increase. The issue of funding the larger Sportsplex project has been a major discussion among city leaders. In June, commissioners rejected a proposed property tax increase that would have helped cover nearly $5.9 million annually in debt payments associated with constructing the new complex.
The proposed Sportsplex improvements include a wide range of recreational features. Plans call for a 12-court basketball gymnasium, upgrades to the existing Aquatics Complex pools, a fitness center, meeting rooms, locker rooms, and a family entertainment area.
The planned improvements would be located near Sportsplex Drive and Royal Palm Boulevard, where city leaders hope the expanded facility can become a destination for both residents and visitors.
Officials envision the upgraded complex as a place that can host basketball tournaments and other large events while also providing local families with additional opportunities for exercise, recreation, and community gatherings.
The design contract selection process began earlier this year. In April, 15 firms submitted proposals for the work. Six companies advanced to make presentations before the evaluation committee in June, with PBK Architects Florida ultimately receiving the highest ranking.
While the project continues to move through the planning stages, no construction start date has been announced. The city will need to complete additional reviews, approvals, and financial planning before any building work begins.
The upcoming commission meeting will take place at 9 a.m. in the Coral Springs City Hall Commission Chambers. Residents interested in the future of the Sportsplex project will have the opportunity to follow the discussion as city leaders consider the next step in the long-term development plan.
