New Pummarola restaurant brings traditional Neapolitan flavors and Italian family heritage to Coral Springs

Coral Springs, Florida – A new restaurant is bringing the flavors of Naples to Coral Springs, with Pummarola Pizzeria Napoletana opening its doors this week and adding another Italian dining option to the city’s growing restaurant scene.

Pummarola opened August 12 at 6240 Coral Ridge Drive, Suite 115, in the space previously occupied by Scuola Vecchia. The restaurant specializes in wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza, but its menu goes well beyond pizza, offering fresh pasta, sandwiches, salads, sides and desserts.

The Coral Springs location is managed by Daniele Sella and is the latest South Florida addition to the family-owned Pummarola brand. The restaurant’s story, however, began decades ago in Naples with a grandmother whose cooking eventually became the foundation of the business.

According to the company, Rosa Donna Rummo founded the original Pummarola in Naples in 1968. She had become known in her neighborhood for preparing meals for family members, friends and neighbors. Her connection to the restaurant’s name was even tied to the small red Fiat 500 she drove.

Locals reportedly said the car looked like a “pummarola,” the Neapolitan word for tomato. The name remained with the family business and, years later, became part of the restaurant’s identity.

After Rummo died and the original restaurant closed, her four grandchildren eventually decided to bring the family concept back. They revived Pummarola and began expanding it beyond Naples, carrying the family’s food traditions into new communities.

The red Fiat 500 remains an important symbol for the company. It can be found at Pummarola restaurants as a tribute to Rummo and the family history behind the brand.

At the Coral Springs location, the main attraction is the pizza. Pummarola prepares traditional Neapolitan-style pies in wood-fired ovens handcrafted in Italy. The company says it uses plum tomatoes imported from Italy, whole-milk mozzarella from Italian farmers and Italian Polselli flour.

The pizzas are made in the traditional Neapolitan style, with a soft center and edges that become crisp and lightly charred from the heat of the wood-fired oven. It is a style that puts much of the emphasis on the dough, ingredients and high-temperature cooking rather than heavy toppings.

For customers who want something other than pizza, the menu includes several other Italian favorites. Fresh pasta, sandwiches, salads, side dishes and desserts give diners a range of options for a full meal or a quick bite.

The restaurant also offers takeout and delivery, along with catering services for larger gatherings and events. Pummarola’s mobile catering operation features wood-fired ovens imported from Naples, bringing the same style of pizza preparation outside the restaurant.

The brand has also built a reputation around pizza-making competitions. Chef Pasquale Mormile won the Pizza Napoletana Division at the 2023 International Pizza Expo & Conference in Las Vegas, according to the company’s website.

Pummarola also gives customers a chance to learn how the pizzas are made. The company offers pizza-making classes at several of its South Florida locations, where participants can learn the basics of preparing the dough, stretching it, adding toppings and creating a Neapolitan-style pizza.

The Coral Springs restaurant joins a growing South Florida presence for the brand. Pummarola already operates locations in Boca Raton, Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Its arrival also adds another food option to the Coral Ridge Drive area. The restaurant shares the plaza with Generoso’s Italian Sandwich Shop and Espresso Bar, giving the location another Italian-focused business.

For Coral Springs residents interested in trying the new restaurant, Pummarola is open seven days a week. Sunday through Thursday hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., while the restaurant stays open until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The Coral Springs location can be reached at 954-899-4759.

While the restaurant may be new to Coral Springs, the concept behind it is built around a family story that began more than half a century ago. From Rosa Donna Rummo’s meals in Naples to the red Fiat that became a lasting symbol, the Pummarola brand has carried pieces of that history into its modern restaurants.

Now, that tradition has made its way to Coral Springs, where the new location is offering residents a chance to experience Neapolitan pizza prepared in wood-fired ovens while also exploring a broader menu of Italian dishes.
