Gentilhomme takes individual title as MSD wins team honors at Tradewinds Park
Coral Springs, Florida – Sore shins did not keep Coral Springs High School’s Marcus Gentilhomme from finishing first at the Coral Springs area boys’ cross-country championship. He won the October 13 race at Tradewinds Park, where runners competed after severe weather forced the event to be postponed.
Gentilhomme went into the race feeling discomfort but came away with the individual title and his attention already turning toward district competition.
“My legs were sore, but I decided I would just go out and win the race, and I did. I felt good about winning the race, and I am looking forward to the upcoming district competition,” said Gentilhomme.
Coral Glades High School’s Tyler Cline finished second. His approach was to hold back early before increasing his pace toward the end.

“I ran slower during the first two miles and ran a faster pace during the final mile. I felt good about my performance today, and I am working on improving,” he said.
Another Coral Glades runner, Fabio Castillo, placed fourth and expressed confidence in his teammates’ performance. “We are practicing hard every day,” he said. Castillo is a senior with a 5.08 grade point average and ranks 25th among 627 students in his class.
Coral Glades Coach Frankie Cunningham credited his runners’ regular training and effort as they prepare for a challenging district meet.
“We have a tough district, and we have been working to get better. We are doing well because we show up and practice hard every day. I believe we will do well at the district meet,” he said.

While Gentilhomme claimed the individual championship, Marjory Stoneman Douglas earned the top team finish. Team captain Nick Rosenberg said he enjoys running and was encouraged by the group’s progress.
“We did well today, and we have been practicing hard this season.”
MSD Coach Mike Mauro viewed the race as a chance to assess his team before the upcoming state qualifying meets. The first-place result gave him reason to be pleased with where his runners stood.
“We are doing well. This meet was a measuring stick to see where we are as a team. I believe we ran pretty well today,” he said.
Behind MSD in the team standings, Coral Glades finished second, Taravella placed third, and Coral Springs Charter took fourth. Coral Springs High School did not field a full team, despite Gentilhomme’s individual victory.
