Miami man accused of attacking woman’s car with metal scooter and biting Coral Springs police office
Coral Springs, Florida – A Miami man is facing criminal charges after police say he repeatedly struck a woman’s vehicle with a metal scooter during a domestic disturbance in Coral Springs, then resisted officers and allegedly bit a police officer at a Broward Health facility.
According to a probable cause affidavit, officers with the Coral Springs Police Department responded to the 11100 block of Royal Palm Boulevard on August 18 after authorities received a report of a disturbance.
Police said the woman’s mother contacted authorities after the woman asked her to call for help. At the time officers were notified, the woman was inside her vehicle while a man identified as Junior Bastien, 36, of Miami, was allegedly attacking the car with a metal scooter.
The report states that Bastien repeatedly struck the vehicle, including the driver’s-side door and window. The woman remained inside the locked vehicle as the confrontation unfolded.
When an officer arrived, police said he witnessed Bastien “actively and aggressively” using the scooter as a weapon against the vehicle. Bastien allegedly had the scooter raised in both hands as the officer approached him.
The officer ordered Bastien to drop the scooter, and police said he complied. He was then placed in handcuffs.
The woman told investigators that she had asked other people to call 911 while she remained inside the vehicle. She also began recording the incident, according to the affidavit, apparently to document what was happening.
Police said the woman told investigators she was afraid to leave the vehicle because she believed Bastien might break the window, get inside and physically harm or kill her.
The situation did not end when Bastien was handcuffed.
According to the police report, officers repeatedly ordered him to get into a patrol vehicle, but he allegedly refused. Bastien reportedly sat down and eventually lay on the ground as officers attempted to place him inside the vehicle.
Police further alleged that Bastien resisted the officers by hooking his feet underneath the patrol vehicle’s undercarriage. Officers continued trying to move him while he resisted their efforts.
Bastien was eventually transported to a Broward Health facility. The incident allegedly continued there, according to police.
Authorities said Bastien spit on an officer at the medical facility. During a subsequent struggle as officers attempted to restrain him, police alleged that Bastien bit another officer.
After the incident at the hospital, Bastien was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
The case began with a report of a domestic disturbance and quickly developed into a confrontation involving a damaged vehicle, a metal scooter and multiple alleged acts of resistance, according to the probable cause affidavit.
The woman’s account that she remained inside the locked car because she feared for her safety was also included in the police report. Investigators said her decision to record the confrontation provided additional documentation of the encounter.
Police responded to the scene after her mother called for assistance, and the responding officer said he personally observed Bastien striking the vehicle before ordering him to drop the scooter.
The allegations against Bastien are contained in the probable cause affidavit, and the case will proceed through the legal system. As with any criminal case, the allegations are not a finding of guilt, and Bastien is entitled to due process as the case moves forward.
