Wally the cuddly cat and Hugo the senior dog are waiting for loving homes in Broward County
Broward County, Florida – One loves chin scratches and treats. The other prefers walks, spending time with people and the company of fellow dogs.
Wally and Hugo have different personalities and different stories, but they have one important thing in common. Both are waiting for families to adopt them from Broward County Animal Care.
Wally is a 2-year-old domestic shorthair who weighs about 10 pounds. According to Animal Care, he arrived at the shelter in late August after being abandoned at a Walmart in Pompano Beach.
Despite that experience, Wally has shown himself to be a friendly and affectionate cat.
He enjoys attention from people, particularly when someone pets him or gives him scratches around his neck and chin. Lickable treats are another favorite, making them one possible way for a future owner to quickly get his attention.
Then there is Hugo.
At 11 years old, the Manchester terrier mix is looking for another opportunity to settle into a permanent home. Hugo weighs about 22 pounds and arrived at the shelter under very different circumstances.
He was brought to Broward County Animal Care along with nine other dogs after their owner died. Hugo was later adopted, but the placement did not last, and he eventually returned to Animal Care.
Shelter officials say the senior dog is housebroken, enjoys being around people and gets along with other dogs. There is one important requirement for his next home, however. Hugo needs to live in a household without cats.
Both Wally and Hugo are already neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, taking care of several important steps for their future owners.
Their adoption fees have also been waived. Adopters are still required to pay a $25 county pet registration fee.
Hugo comes with an additional form of assistance that could make caring for a senior pet easier. He qualifies for Pet Project sponsorship, a program that provides support throughout his life after adoption.
That sponsorship includes food, vaccines and monthly preventive care, along with access to reduced-cost veterinary services.
Anyone interested in meeting Wally or Hugo can visit Broward County Animal Care at 2400 SW 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale.

The shelter’s adoption lobby is open every day from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Prospective adopters looking specifically for Wally can ask shelter staff for animal ID A2480115. Those interested in giving Hugo a home can use animal ID A1796444.
Because adoption status can change, people interested in either pet are encouraged to check with Broward County Animal Care for their current availability.
For Wally, that could mean a new source of chin scratches and favorite treats. For Hugo, it could mean another chance to spend his senior years with a family of his own.
