Black History Month in Florida: FDOT honoring African Americans for their huge impact

Forida: For Black History Month, the Florida Department of Traffic is highlighting African Americans who have made a big difference in the transportation field.

The first is Garrett Augustus Morgan, who made the traffic light we use today. There were “stop and go” signals before Morgan came up with his idea.

But when Morgan came up with the third position, it stopped traffic in both directions and made it safer for people to cross the street on foot.

His idea would be used all over the U.S. until automatic traffic lights with red, yellow, and green lights came out, which is what we have now.
