Glades Road at SR-9/I-95 exit to close for finalization of Diverging Diamond Interchange project
Boca Raton, Florida – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is putting the final touches on the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) project at the Glades Road and SR-9/I-95 exit, resulting in a weekend-long closure of the roadway from 11 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday morning.
The FDOT has been working on the reconfiguration of the current SR-808/Glades Road and I-95 Interchange to the DDI for over a year, and in January, it opened as a temporary configuration with three lanes. However, after this weekend’s closure, all lanes and movements will be available, and the DDI will be in its final configuration. The closure will allow the construction crew to perform necessary activities, such as repaving with the final lift of asphalt, installing new light poles, and setting up small signs and overhead sign panels, among other tasks.
Here are the closures and detours that drivers need to know:
For travelers heading northbound on I-95, the exit ramp to SR-808/Glades Road will be closed, and traffic will be detoured via I-95 northbound and SR-794/Yamato Road. For those heading southbound on I-95, the exit ramp to SR-808/Glades Road will also be closed, and traffic will be detoured via I-95 southbound and Palmetto Park Road.
For travelers on Glades Road, the I-95 northbound entrance ramp from eastbound SR-808/Glades Road will be closed, and traffic will be detoured via Butts Road, SR-809/Military Trail, and SR-794/Yamato Road. For the I-95 southbound entrance ramp from eastbound SR-808/Glades Road, traffic will be detoured via Butts Road, Town Center Road, SR-809/Military Trail, and Palmetto Park Road. The I-95 northbound entrance ramp from westbound SR-808/Glades Road will be closed as well, and traffic will be detoured via Airport Road and Spanish River Boulevard. For the I-95 southbound entrance ramp from westbound SR-808/Glades Road, traffic will be detoured via Airport Road and Spanish River Boulevard.
The FDOT has confirmed that the Florida Highway Patrol will be on site at the closures to assist drivers, and pedestrians will be detoured to the north sidewalk during this phase.
Once the DDI is in its final configuration, the FDOT has these notes for the public:
Use caution as you approach the interchange – the posted speed within the DDI is 35 MPH. The I-95 southbound entrance ramp from eastbound Glades Road will be accessible from the far outside left lane. The I-95 northbound entrance ramp from westbound Glades Road will have a dedicated lane from the far outside left lane, as well as a combined turn/through option in the second to left outside lane. Drivers wishing to travel straight through the DDI should stay in the interior lanes. Obey the traffic signals just as you would on any other roadway. Do not block the crossovers; these should be treated like any other intersection – they need to remain clear to ensure proper traffic flow and emergency service access.
The Glades Road DDI project will significantly improve the flow of traffic for drivers in the area. The weekend-long closure and subsequent detours may cause temporary inconvenience, but the long-term benefits will undoubtedly outweigh any short-term disruptions.
