After 43 Years in law enforcement, a former Coral Springs police officer turns to children’s books
Coral springs, Florida – David Dittman has discovered a new way to give back to his Coral Springs town after 43 years of law enforcement: writing children’s books.
In his debut book, The Magic Bench, Dittman delves into themes of kindness and connection, drawing on his experience as a Coral Springs school resource officer.
After serving as a school officer at Coral Springs’ Country Hills Elementary and Eagle Ridge Elementary schools for seven years, Dittman retired from the Coral Springs Police Department in 2022. A courtyard seat at Country Hills Elementary was dedicated as a memorial in his honor.
The Coral Springs City Commission will commemorate Dittman’s talents as an author and his forty years of service this week as part of a celebration of his twin careers.
According to a city brief announcing the honor, “We are thrilled to see his positive influence and legacy continuing through his writing and excited for the future of every student he inspires.”
On Tuesday, Dittman was unavailable for comment.
His work as a school officer served as the inspiration for the children’s book The Magic Bench, which highlights the value of human connection and creativity.
Dittman has been reading the tale to Coral Springs primary school children ever since he retired.
Dittman has several noteworthy accomplishments throughout his time in law enforcement.
He worked on federal task forces focusing on terrorism and violent crime while with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department prior to joining the Coral Springs Police Department.
He won around 90 honors over the years, including one for his part in the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
