Sawgrass Expressway reopens after semi-truck carrying garbage catches fire and causes temporary traffic shutdown
Coral Springs, Florida – The northbound lanes of the Sawgrass Expressway reopened Monday afternoon after being closed for about two hours following a semi-truck fire near University Drive in Coral Springs.
The incident happened when a semi-truck carrying garbage caught fire while traveling along the expressway, according to Coral Springs Fire Department spokesperson Ryan Himmel. The driver noticed the emergency situation, pulled the truck over and called 911 before firefighters arrived at the scene.
Fire crews responded quickly and worked to extinguish the flames. The fire caused significant disruption for drivers in the area, with the northbound lanes completely shut down while emergency responders handled the situation.
Officials closed the roadway to allow firefighters to safely battle the blaze and prevent additional hazards. The closure lasted approximately two hours before the lanes were reopened and traffic was allowed to move through the area again.
No injuries were reported in connection with the fire. The truck driver was able to safely exit the vehicle, and officials said everyone involved was safe.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Authorities did not provide additional details about what may have started the blaze or whether the truck sustained major damage.
The incident created delays for motorists traveling through the Coral Springs area during the afternoon hours. Drivers were advised to expect traffic impacts while emergency crews worked at the scene.
Semi-truck fires can create additional challenges for emergency responders because of the size of the vehicles and the materials they may be carrying. In this case, firefighters focused on controlling the flames and making sure the area was safe before allowing traffic to resume.
The Sawgrass Expressway is a major roadway used by thousands of drivers each day throughout Broward County, and temporary closures can quickly affect surrounding traffic routes.
After the fire was brought under control and crews completed their work, the northbound lanes were reopened, allowing normal travel to continue.
Officials have not announced whether further investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted. The incident remains under review.
