Coral Springs I-95 commuters face years-long construction as SW 10th Street Connector Project begins with major traffic changes
Coral Springs, Florida – Drivers in Coral Springs who regularly use I-95 should prepare for a major change to their commute as a long-term construction project begins this week in Broward County. The Florida Department of Transportation is moving forward with an early phase of the $1.3 billion SW 10th Street Connector Project, bringing bridge closures, overnight lane reductions, and traffic shifts expected to continue for several years.
The first major impact begins at 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, when FDOT closes the NW/NE 48th Street bridge over I-95 in Deerfield Beach. The closure affects the section of roadway between NW 3rd Avenue and NE 2nd Avenue and is expected to remain in place through summer 2027.
For many Coral Springs residents who rely on nearby routes to reach I-95, the closure will create new travel patterns and likely add congestion to already busy roads. According to FDOT, traffic affected by the bridge closure will be redirected to major corridors including Sample Road, Powerline Road, Dixie Highway, and SW 10th Street.
The bridge closure is part of the larger SW 10th Street Connector Project, an initiative included in the state’s Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative. Transportation officials have described the project as a critical missing connection between the Sawgrass Expressway and I-95, addressing traffic congestion and safety concerns that have affected the area for decades.
The overall project is expected to transform the SW 10th Street corridor by creating two separate roadway systems. One will provide connector lanes designed for regional travel between the two major highways, while the other will rebuild the local roadway system with improvements for nearby communities.
The redesigned local corridor will include a 12-foot shared-use path intended for pedestrians and cyclists. The project will also expand I-95 Express Lanes from one lane to two lanes in each direction and rebuild the I-95 interchanges at SW 10th Street and Hillsboro Boulevard.
Construction on the larger project is expected to begin in summer 2027, with completion scheduled for 2032.
Before the major construction phase begins, crews will complete several early tasks, including building noise barrier walls and relocating utilities. However, drivers will begin seeing impacts immediately as crews prepare the area for future work.
In addition to the bridge closure, FDOT has announced several overnight I-95 lane closures connected to the project.
Southbound I-95 lanes will close from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Aug. 2, with Aug. 4 scheduled as a backup date. Northbound lanes will close during the same overnight hours on Aug. 3, with Aug. 5 available as a backup.
Additional overnight closures are planned as crews continue preparation work. Northbound lanes will close on Aug. 6 for the removal of a message sign, while southbound lanes will be closed Aug. 11 through Aug. 13 as crews work on bridge demolition.
Express lanes will also experience overnight closures from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday between Aug. 6 and Aug. 21. These closures are needed for barrier wall construction and demolition work related to the bridge project.
Drivers using general-purpose lanes should also expect restrictions. Two outside lanes in each direction are scheduled to close nightly from Aug. 9 through Aug. 20.
Although the construction will create disruptions, FDOT said access to homes, businesses, schools, and emergency services will remain available throughout the project.
Transportation officials are encouraging drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and stay aware of changing traffic patterns as the work progresses. For Coral Springs commuters who depend on I-95 every day, the upcoming changes represent the beginning of a lengthy construction period that will reshape one of Broward County’s busiest transportation connections.
