Sanibel Causeway expected to reopen by the end of October
SANIBEL, Fla. — The Sanibel Causeway is expected to be reopened to traffic by the end of October thanks to efforts being made by the Florida Department of Transportation to speed up the process of restoring the bridge.
This news was made at the same time that Governor Ron DeSantis said that a contract had been granted for the rehabilitation of the bridge.
If rapid repairs can be finished, first responders will be able to gain entry to the island, which will enable them to continue their continuing operations to ensure life and safety. After this is completed, people from the mainland will have access to Sanibel Island by motor vehicle.
When the emergency repairs to fix the damage are done, the causeway will be fixed in a way that will last for a long time.
“The emergency repairs being done now will offer a safe passage for immediate access and will also be incorporated into long-term repair plans,” FDOT said in a statement. “This means that repairs being done now will tie into work that will be needed for permanent repairs.”
During Hurricane Ian, which also caused a lot of damage to the barrier islands off the coast of Southwest Florida, different parts of the bridge fell down.
