James S. Hunt Elementary students in Coral Springs participate in peace week by painting rocks with messages of kindness

Coral Springs, Florida – Students at James S. Hunt Elementary School in Coral Springs are embracing creativity and kindness this week as part of Broward County Public Schools’ annual Choose Peace/Stop Violence Week. On Thursday at 11 a.m., the school will host a special rock-painting activity designed to encourage messages of unity, positivity, and respect among students.

During the event, children will decorate small rocks with uplifting phrases and artistic designs that reflect the theme of this year’s observance: “Speak Life. End Bullying.” The colorful creations will be placed around the school campus as a lasting reminder for everyone who walks the grounds to promote peace and stand against violence and harassment.

“Choose Peace/Stop Violence Week is an opportunity for students to use their voices to uplift others and promote respect,” organizers said. “Activities like the rock-painting event help students recognize the power of their words and actions in fostering a positive school environment.”

The initiative is a countywide effort led by Broward County Public Schools in partnership with the United Way of Broward County and the Children’s Services Council of Broward County. Each activity throughout the week is carefully planned to engage students in meaningful ways, emphasizing empathy, kindness, and community involvement. By participating in these events, students learn that they can make a tangible difference in the lives of their peers.

The rock-painting project at James S. Hunt Elementary is just one of many planned activities during the week. Students are encouraged to explore various creative outlets to express messages of hope, peace, and understanding. The projects aim not only to beautify the school campus but also to instill a sense of responsibility and awareness about the importance of fostering a safe and supportive environment for everyone.

Choose Peace/Stop Violence Week concludes on Friday with Peace Across Broward Day, a countywide observance encouraging students and staff to wear white as a symbol of peace and solidarity. The day provides an opportunity for reflection, celebration of positive actions, and recognition of the collective efforts being made to reduce bullying and violence in schools.

By combining artistic expression with community engagement, James S. Hunt Elementary students are contributing to a broader movement that reinforces the values of respect, inclusion, and empathy. The rock-painting activity not only leaves a colorful mark on the campus but also serves as a visual reminder that small gestures of kindness can have a lasting impact.

As students place their decorated rocks around the school, the hope is that these messages of peace will inspire conversations, encourage thoughtful actions, and remind everyone in the school community that promoting kindness and standing against bullying is a shared responsibility.
