J.P. Taravella wrestling team celebrates senior athletes during emotional victory night

Coral Springs, Florida – The J.P. Taravella High School wrestling team paused to honor its senior athletes during an emotional Senior Night on January 22, marking a milestone for four standout wrestlers as the Trojans secured a victory over Monarch and Stranahan. The event highlighted not only athletic achievement but also the dedication and commitment required to excel in the demanding sport of wrestling.

Leading the celebrations was team captain Caden Ankele, who competes at 150 pounds and boasts an impressive 15-4 record this season. A regional qualifier last year, Ankele has set his sights on competing at the state championship meet this year. “It takes time, consistency, and discipline to do well in wrestling,” he said. Beyond the mat, Ankele plans to pursue a career as a firefighter and EMT after graduating, blending his love for physical challenge with a desire to serve his community.

Anthony Walton, wrestling at 165 pounds, was also honored as a senior during the ceremony. Walton, who plans to attend the University of Central Florida to study engineering, may continue wrestling through a college club program. “It takes a lot of blood, sweat, and dedication to compete in wrestling, and you need start as early as possible,” he said, reflecting on the long journey from beginner to varsity competitor.

Dennis Bautista, competing at 144 pounds, received recognition for his contributions to the team and is focused on excelling in the tournaments ahead. “It takes training and discipline to be a good wrestler,” Bautista said. After high school, he intends to pursue a career as a police officer and join the National Guard, channeling the discipline he honed in wrestling into public service.

Angel Santiago rounded out the senior honorees, receiving accolades for his efforts and commitment to the Trojan program. Together, the seniors have provided leadership and skill that have contributed to J.P. Taravella’s strong 12-3 team record this season.

Looking ahead, the Trojans are preparing for the challenges of late-season competition. On January 30-31, the team will compete in a highly competitive tournament at Olympic Heights, facing top squads from Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade counties. Programs such as Cardinal Gibbons, South Dade, Columbus, and Park Vista are expected to test the Trojans’ mettle and provide a glimpse of the state-level competition that lies ahead.
