As the new vice mayor of Coral Springs, Nancy Mateyer Bowen creates history
Coral Springs, Florida – Last week, Nancy Mateyer Bowen became the first Black and Haitian American woman to hold the position of vice mayor of Coral Springs after being voted by her fellow city commissioners.
She was elected to the city’s elected board in 2020, making her the first Black and Haitian American woman.
When no one registered to run against her earlier this year, she was re-elected to the panel.
Mateyer Bowen was unanimously appointed to the position after receiving plaudits from her fellow commissioners at last week’s city commission meeting.
Every year, a five-member elected board chooses a deputy mayor from among the current city commissioners. According to City Attorney John Hearn, the individual has typically held that position for two years.
Following the vote, Mateyer Bowen received the gavel and a designated parking sign from Commissioner Shawn Cerra, who resigned as vice mayor.
When Mayor Scott Brook is not accessible, the vice mayor steps in.
