A man from Coral Springs was charged in a fatal NYE hit-and-run accident
Coral Springs, Florida – Authorities announced Thursday that a guy from Coral Springs had been arrested for allegedly escaping the scene of a tragic crash that killed a scooter operator on New Year’s Eve.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Lokesley Myrthil was riding a Volpam electric scooter west on West Copans Road just before 10:30 p.m. when Jacques Malik Mayfield, 24, struck him while driving a white Audi Q7 west near the 3000 block of West Copans Road in Pompano Beach.
The Audi got into the scooter’s path, just outside the bike lane, and caused the two cars to collide, according to detectives from the BSO Traffic Homicide Unit. According to police, Myrthil was flung into the road after colliding with the Audi’s windshield.
At the scene, Myrthil was declared deceased. BSO did not disclose any more details regarding Myrthil, including their gender.
After striking Myrthil, Mayfield continued driving westward, according to detectives, until he arrived at the 3600 block of West Copans Road. He halted there and, according to BSO, walked away with several passengers.
While attempting to board an Uber, Mayfield and one of his passengers were apprehended and taken into custody by Coconut Creek Police officers, according to the police.
Mayfield was arrested and sent to the BSO Main Jail on accusations of felony probation violation, driving without a license causing death, and failure to remain at an accident involving death.
He was being held without bond on Thursday, according to jail records. Whether any of Mayfield’s passengers who escaped the vehicle with him will be charged with a crime remained unclear on Thursday.
