Governor Ron DeSantis announces plan to provide $1,000 property tax rebates to help Florida homeowners with financial relief

Orlando, Florida – Governor Ron DeSantis has unveiled a proposal aimed at providing direct financial relief to Florida homeowners through property tax rebates. The plan, announced in Orlando, seeks to return an average of $1,000 per homesteaded property across the state, benefiting over 5.1 million homeowners. The rebates would be issued in December 2025 and are specifically targeted to cover state-mandated school property taxes.

In his announcement, DeSantis emphasized the need to ease the financial burden on Florida families while ensuring that school district funding remains intact. He also reiterated his broader goal of ultimately eliminating property taxes through a future constitutional amendment.

“Property taxes effectively require homeowners to pay rent to the government,” DeSantis stated. “Constitutional protections for Florida homeowners require approval of the voters in 2026. In the meantime, Floridians need relief. I am today proposing a plan that will result in—on average—$1,000 rebate checks for each homestead as a discount on their property taxes. If the Legislature acts on this plan now, we can get this done this year. Let’s get this done for the people of Florida this session.”

The governor is urging the Florida Legislature to act swiftly in granting the authority needed to implement the rebates. He highlighted Florida’s strong revenue position as a key factor in making this initiative possible. DeSantis believes that using the state’s financial stability to provide direct relief to full-time residents is a responsible and effective way to support homeowners.

If approved, this initiative would mark a significant step in DeSantis’ broader tax reform agenda. The rebate program would provide immediate relief while laying the groundwork for future tax policy changes. Many Florida homeowners, who have faced rising property taxes in recent years, would likely welcome the initiative.

The next step for the proposal lies with the Florida Legislature, which will need to deliberate and authorize the rebate program. If passed, the plan could set a precedent for future tax reforms in the state, aligning with DeSantis’ long-term vision of reducing the tax burden on Florida residents.

As the legislative session progresses, Florida homeowners and lawmakers alike will be watching closely to see if this proposal moves forward and brings the promised relief. DeSantis’ call to action puts pressure on legislators to act swiftly, making this a key issue to follow in the coming months.
