Governor Ron DeSantis extends State of Emergency in Florida to address continued migration crisis

Florida – On April 5, 2025, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order Number 25-75, renewing the state of emergency declared in January 2023 due to the ongoing crisis caused by the mass migration of illegal aliens into the state. This latest executive order extends the original emergency, which was first outlined in Executive Order 23-03, and highlights the ongoing strain that the influx of migrants continues to place on local resources.

The original emergency order, issued by Governor DeSantis on January 6, 2023, was intended to address the significant number of illegal immigrants entering Florida. As the situation has not improved, and in light of what the Governor described as an inadequate response from the Biden Administration, the state is now set to extend its state of emergency for an additional 60 days. Governor DeSantis cited the continued burden on local resources as one of the primary reasons for the extension, underscoring the critical need for coordinated state-level action.

In the Executive Order, Governor DeSantis states, “The large influx and number of illegal aliens within the State remains, and the response from the Biden Administration was inadequate.” This reflects the Governor’s ongoing concerns over the federal government’s handling of the migration crisis and Florida’s need for more support in addressing the issue. The renewal of the emergency order grants the state additional time and resources to tackle the challenges posed by the migrant surge.

The order also reaffirms the provisions laid out in the original executive order. These provisions, which are designed to coordinate resources across the state, were initially put in place to ensure that local governments and law enforcement agencies could adequately respond to the crisis. By continuing to activate these measures, Governor DeSantis aims to provide sustained relief and ensure that state resources are used efficiently to address the persistent issue.

Governor DeSantis has been vocal about his administration’s commitment to managing Florida’s response to illegal immigration independently, citing concerns over the adequacy of federal support. The state’s decision to extend the emergency order comes as Florida continues to face significant challenges related to the number of migrants arriving at its borders, particularly along the southern and southwestern regions.

This executive order is effective immediately, and its provisions will remain in place until at least June 7, 2025, unless further action is taken by the Governor. The state of emergency allows for more flexibility and additional resources to be directed toward the affected areas, enabling state agencies to coordinate efforts more effectively in the face of what is described as an ongoing crisis.

Governor DeSantis’s decision to extend the state of emergency is a reflection of the challenges facing Florida as it works to manage the influx of illegal immigrants. It also signals a continued focus on state-level action in response to the crisis, especially as local communities continue to bear the brunt of the federal government’s limited intervention.

With this extension, Florida’s leadership is making it clear that the state will continue to take proactive steps to address this issue, even as it seeks further support from the federal government. The ongoing state of emergency will likely remain a key issue for both the Governor’s office and state lawmakers in the months ahead as they navigate the complexities of immigration, resources, and state sovereignty.
