Florida Courts begin a Month of Awareness Events highlighting problem-solving courts and substance use challenges

Florida – As the calendar turns to May, Florida is placing a spotlight on two vital initiatives that support individuals facing some of the most complex challenges in our communities. Recognized each year, Problem-Solving Court Month and Florida Opioids and Stimulants Use Disorder Awareness Month serve to highlight the importance of specialized courts and awareness efforts in combating substance abuse and mental health issues.

Throughout May, court systems and partner organizations across the state will host a range of events and educational sessions aimed at raising awareness and sharing success stories from problem-solving courts. These courts are designed to address the root causes of criminal behavior—such as drug addiction, mental illness, and veterans’ reintegration struggles—by offering alternative pathways through treatment, accountability, and rehabilitation.

To launch this month-long awareness campaign, a special webinar is scheduled for May 2, 2025, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m., which will bring together courts and stakeholders for a dynamic online event. The agenda promises to provide inspiration, updates, and collaboration opportunities for those working in or supporting these courts.

Attendees can expect to hear “insights into Florida’s diverse problem-solving courts from experienced circuit and statewide leaders,” along with “inspiring and motivating success stories” from individuals whose lives have been positively impacted by these specialized judicial programs.

In addition, the webinar will include “valuable resources to support problem-solving courts,” and cover “timely news and resources for addressing opioid and stimulant use issues.” Organizers will also share “ideas for potential partners for court services and initiatives” and offer moments to “celebrate the work of those in the field along with problem-solving court participants.”

Florida’s problem-solving courts include drug courts, mental health courts, veterans courts, and early childhood courts, each tailored to a specific population and their unique needs. These courts are widely credited with reducing recidivism, improving outcomes for participants, and creating safer and healthier communities.

As opioid and stimulant use continues to rise in many parts of the country, Florida’s initiative also brings critical attention to the need for informed, compassionate approaches to treatment and intervention.

By dedicating this month to these essential efforts, Florida aims to educate, connect, and strengthen its communities—one case, one person, and one solution at a time.
