Coral Springs proudly honors skier who turned backyard plastic sheets into gold at the Special Olympics World Winter Games

Coral Springs, Florida – From makeshift slopes in a Pompano Beach backyard to the snowy mountains of the world stage, KellieMarie Matthew’s journey is anything but ordinary. Last week, the Coral Springs City Commission proudly recognized Matthew for her remarkable performance at the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games, where she earned two gold medals and inspired a community.

Matthew’s story begins with creativity, grit, and an unusual training method. Long before competing internationally, she practiced skiing on plastic sheets soaked in dish soap and water. With no mountains in sight and limited access to snow, she and her supporters built a slope in her backyard, turning determination into innovation.

That determination paid off. At this year’s Winter Games, Matthew captured gold in both the Giant Slalom and Slalom events. She also secured an impressive fourth-place finish in the Intermediate Super-G. Representing Special Olympics USA in Alpine Skiing, her performance placed her among the top competitors in the world.

“She started with plastic and soap,” said a Coral Springs city official during the ceremony. “Now she’s standing on top of the world.”

Matthew’s connection to Special Olympics began early. She joined the organization when she was just nine years old and has since grown into a disciplined and determined athlete. Although she faces challenges related to a learning disability, those obstacles have never slowed her down.

Her journey from South Florida to snowy peaks included ski trips to Colorado and North Carolina, where she experienced real snow for the first time. Each trip helped build her skills and confidence, adding to the foundation laid on those homemade slopes.

“KellieMarie’s story is one of passion, resilience, and heart,” said a city representative during the recognition event. “She reminds us that greatness can come from the most unexpected places.”

Away from the slopes, Matthew leads a grounded life. She works as a server at Park Summit, a senior living community in Coral Springs, where she is known for her warmth and dedication.

“I think people often underestimate what someone can do,” said one of her coworkers. “But KellieMarie proves them wrong every day.”

The Coral Springs community has rallied around Matthew, celebrating not only her medals but her spirit. Her story has inspired many, showing what’s possible with creativity, perseverance, and support.

As for Matthew, she’s already thinking ahead. Her love for skiing hasn’t slowed since the Games. With her trademark drive and a heart full of ambition, the slopes — plastic or snowy — are still calling.
