Last year’s concerns remain despite the fact that Miami-Dade students returned to school

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Thousands of Miami-Dade County students returned to school on Wednesday.

Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools Jose Dotres visited multiple schools as thousands of children returned from summer vacation.

Dotres said, “The children have been uplifted and more motivated now that the pandemic is not a major factor in our lives.”

He added that the Miami-Dade school district and other education systems had “a lot of work to do” about the learning curve and pandemic-related learning loss.

Comstock Elementary in Miami’s Allapattah area was one of numerous stops for Dotres in the nation’s fourth biggest school system.

Dotres visited Ms. Quintana’s third-grade reading class, where a number of students were English language learners and recent U.S. immigrants.

Due to the fact that English is not his native language, Dotres feels empathy for students with a steep learning curve and hopes that educators will pay more attention to students’ proficiency levels.

“We’ve showed a lot of recovery in the academic progress, however we have to pay attention to proficiency levels. In some of the students we still have to accelerate learning to catch them up,” Dotres added.
