Man arrested in connection with the 2024 killing of Coral Springs resident whose body was found in Dania Beach Canal

Dania Beach, Florida – A man has been arrested in connection with the 2024 killing of Coral Springs resident Christopher A. Patterson, whose body was discovered in a Dania Beach canal last November. The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) announced the arrest on Friday, marking a significant development in a case that had left the community on edge for months.

Patterson, 41, was found floating in the canal near the 4500 block of Southwest 43rd Terrace on November 1, 2024. BSO deputies responded to the scene at approximately 11:06 a.m., where the BSO Dive Team recovered his body. Initial investigations by homicide detectives revealed little about the circumstances surrounding his death, leading to an intense and ongoing inquiry.

For several months, investigators worked tirelessly to identify Patterson and determine the cause of death. As the investigation progressed, detectives were able to piece together clues that eventually led them to 35-year-old Shem Sherrod. According to BSO, the fatal incident took place under a bridge near 4501 South State Road 7 in Davie, though details about the exact nature of the crime remain limited.

On April 9, 2025, Shem Sherrod was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and aggravated battery. He was booked into the BSO Main Jail, where he remains in custody. BSO did not release further details about the motive behind the killing, but authorities are continuing to investigate the case.

As the legal process moves forward, the Broward Sheriff’s Office assures the public that they are dedicated to uncovering all the facts and bringing justice for Patterson’s family.
