Cold weather emergency issued in Broward County for this weekend

Local communities across the country are taking a variety of approaches to addressing homelessness, which represents a significant issue in the U.S. and is constantly increasing year-by year.

Providing a warm shelter during the cold winter months is one of the short-term solutions to helping the homeless. Even though the temperature in Florida might not seem low to people from states like North Dakota, Wyoming, or Montana, the warming shelters are more than welcome to Floridians who spend the nights outside.

While cooler weather is on the way, officials in Broward County are opening two warming shelters for the homeless just in time for Christmas, following in the footsteps of Martin County.

As meteorologists expect the temperatures in Broward County to be in the low 40s over the weekend, county officials issued a cold weather emergency.

The cold weather emergency will be in effect from Friday at 6 p.m. through Sunday at 9 a.m. Therefore, anyone who does not have a place to sleep has the opportunity to stay at these shelters on Friday night and again on Saturday night and is strongly encouraged to go to one of the following locations:

The Salvation Army, 1445 West Broward Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale

HOPE South Florida, 1100 North Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale
